Car Key Replacement Options

Everyone loses their car keys occasionally. But if you’re one of those people who seems to always misplace them, it can cost a lot to replace them. The key type, fob model and even the year of your car all determine how much it will cost to have a replacement made.

For those who don’t have a spare, it may be possible to have a traditional key cut at a locksmith (provided the key number and immobilizer code are available, which the dealer may charge extra for). If you have the original key, however, it is typically cheaper to get a duplicate at your local auto parts store or even at home with a key cutter and some basic tools.

Many modern cars have a detachable key fob, which has an internal transmitter that allows you to enter the vehicle without a key. These are usually a little larger than a regular key and come in a variety of colors, shapes and finishes. If you lost a fob, your best option is to have it replaced by the car dealership that sold you the vehicle. Alternatively, you can also buy a used one online and have it programmed at a local locksmith.

You can also try to reset your fob using the steps in your car’s manual. This is generally done by pressing a sequence of buttons in the right order. It may help to have a friend or family member with you, as the process can be confusing and difficult to understand.

Another option is to have your key fob programmed by a local locksmith, though this will likely be more expensive than going to the car dealership. Most local locksmiths offer a service to reprogram your fob, which means that they will need the vehicle’s VIN and key number, which are usually found in the driver’s door frame or on the inside of the dashboard.

Some modern keys, especially those from Mercedes-Benz, are designed as anti-theft devices. These have a plastic head that contains a computer chip which sends a signal to the car to confirm that it is the correct key and allows it to start. If you lose a smart key, it’s going to be extremely difficult to replace and could cost up to $200.

To save money, you can buy a generic key and fob from online retailers like AutoZone. This will probably be less expensive than getting a new key from the dealership, but it won’t look exactly like your original key and may not work in all vehicles. You can also check your car’s warranty, car-insurance policy or auto club membership to see if it will pay for a replacement or provide partial reimbursement. Many new-car bumper-to-bumper warranties include key fob replacement as part of the coverage. You can also check the terms and conditions of your auto loan, as these might cover this expense as well.
