Key Cutting Machines

A key cutting machine is an easy to use device that duplicates keys for those in need of a spare or to make replacement keys. Many hardware and locksmith stores have these machines available to customers, allowing them to save time and money over the process of finding and purchasing new keys. Key cutting can be a tricky task, as it requires a certain level of precision to ensure that the new key is accurate and that the original key works properly with the lock. Incorrect measurements can cause the key to malfunction, potentially requiring professional intervention or even resulting in expensive repairs.

The earliest keys were made from wooden pins, a precursor to the more precise metal keys that are used today. By the Middle Ages, key cutting took a huge leap forward with the introduction of wards—protrusions and indentations that align perfectly with key pins to turn and unlock a lock. These innovations allowed keys to be cut in the shape of the wards, making them more reliable and easier to use.

Modern key cutting methods involve the use of specialized machines that are more precise than previous versions. Laser-cut keys, for example, offer an alternative to traditional blade-cutting machines that can produce a key with greater accuracy, especially for high-security key systems. Code-based key cutting is another recent advancement that allows a key to be produced based on its unique code, eliminating the need for an original key during the duplication process.

Before key duplication can begin, the original key must be secured in one vise and a blank key stock (often called a “key plate”) in another. A key cutting machine typically has two vises, allowing the original and the blank to be placed in them at the same time. The key cutting machine then makes a duplicate of the original key by tracing the shape of the original with a stylus while simultaneously cutting the blank key to match the same profile as the original.

Depending on the type of key, the entire key duplication process can take as little as five minutes. This is a great option for those who are looking to make a spare key for someone sharing access to their home, business or car. Having a spare can save you from a stressful situation in the future, such as losing your key or having it accidentally break off in a lock.

Key accessories, such as key rings, hiders and more are also available to help you keep your keys secure wherever they go.
